Lodgings Lockdown Diary

Dr Rob Ellis, Principal, shares a brief insight into the daily happenings over in the Principal’s Lodgings.

Sunday 6 April

Church service ‘attended’ on zoom. People don’t realise that their microphones are on and that their whispered comment about the minister can be heard by everyone, not just their neighbour. Such fun.

Monday 7 April

Five laps of the Quad at a brisk walking pace as daylight fades. Turns out it’s not as far as you think. 140 steps per lap. This isn’t going to do much for my step count.

Tuesday 8 April

Today I’ve been sent nine short videos, a step by step guide to making sourdough, by a patient (and bored) friend – who had given me a sourdough starter in January. I have been keeping the starter going since then but not ventured into baking a loaf as yet. Next week.

Wednesday 9 April

Stuck for something to do, Sue has been through all the kitchen cupboards purging out of date food. Oldest found was ‘best before August 2011.’ Probably won’t risk that.

Thursday 10 April

Tulips delivered: an Easter gift. Very cheerful they are too. Five-laps-of-quad time improving.

Friday 11 April

Warm enough to sit in the garden again today. But it already feels as if there should be finalists revising on the grass.

Saturday 12 April

Unable to get to shops so ordered a fresh fish delivery, but inadvertently got whole fish rather than fillets. Hilarious though also rather stressful time trying to work out what to do with a Lemon Sole with the help of several YouTube videos. Vegetarianism seeming a good option right now. Filleting broccoli a good deal easier.

Sunday 13 April, Easter Day

The Easter Bunny has left a chocolate egg on our back doorstep! Thank you, Bethany!

Monday 14 April

Poppy refuses to observe social distancing while in the University Parks. When I say ‘two metres, Poppy,’ she looks blankly and carries on sniffing the friendly labrador.
